After the Franklin Castle, we jumped back on the freeway and headed for Niagara Falls, NY. We made it to our modest (ghetto) hotel by about 7:00 pm. After unloading a bit and doing a little research about local restaurants, we headed out for some dinner. Every tourist book and Internet site said to check out “Comos” Italian restaurant. So we did. We wanted to get some takeout in order to save a couple of bucks on a tip (cheapskates, I know). But we couldn’t get the special (salad, entree and dessert for $12) if we didn’t sit. We decided to stay, realizing that $15 (with the tip) was going to be pushing our daily food budget, but we went for it…until our waitress wouldn’t let us split the dinner without charging us an extra $5 plating fee…so, with quite a few disapproving gazes, we got up and left Comos…So much for local fare. A foot long veggie sub is only $5, leaving us under budget and Kim even had half her sub left for breakfast.
After dinner, we decided to go check out the falls. At night they are lit by colored spotlights from the Canadian side and it really gives a neat and new way to look at such an amazing natural wonder. It was a really nice, cool evening and there was hardly anyone at the State Park, so we got to have a romantic walk and views of the American falls without any crowds. It was awesome!

Next we headed 10 miles North to a little town called Lewiston. Here resides the haunted Frontier House. This big ol’ mansion was built by a free mason in 1824. Apparently, his younger brother fell in to some trouble with some gangsters and was consequently stabbed and hung in the basement. Rumor has it that his older brother, the mason, put his body into one of the walls to cover up the scandal. Since then, it’s said that his spirit roams the house, but is especially prevalent in the basement. The Frontier House has changed hands many time, but no one, be it business or family, have been able to live there for more than 6 years. Pretty creepy.
So, that was two haunted locations in one day. Both are good stories, but I’m a little disappointed. I really want to be able to get IN some of the places that we travel to. I’m gonna have to do some more work in my research in order to find the spots that aren’t soooo famous they are completely locked down. I think talking to locals might be a better way to do this…any suggestions would be appreciated.
