Where Are We Going, Kim?
6/12/12
We drove due East out of New Hampshire and into Maine. There was a lot more beautiful scenery, though it was not as mountainous. We saw a bit of wild life as a mother turkey and at least 6 chicks waddled (and fluttered) across the road in front of us (we totally saw the ugly duckling). We set Acadia National Park as our destination, with a quick stop in Bangor for a peek at Stephen King’s home.
Mint parfait with marshmallow goo.
Kim couldn't even finish the top part,
but she got an awesome bib!
Along the way we had to make a few pit stops for some essential camping supplies that would protect us from the predicted rainy elements (which did happen!), so it took longer than we had hoped to make it to Bangor. Then there were some direction complications. Who would guess that there would be TWO Broadway Streets in Bangor. Luckily, we stopped for some serious ice cream to boost our moral and got the correct directions from a kind ice cream scooper.
Bucket List - CHECK!
Needless to say, seeing Stephen King’s home was super exciting, especially for Kim. (Her erratic fan message expresses said excitement perfectly.)
Then, it was off to Acadia. We drove past innumerable old style churches and lobster shacks, and when we finally arrived on the island itself, we were surprised to find so many quaint towns. We had no idea that there were actually people living in the park area and that there is no less than FOUR villages on the island itself. Bar Harbor (Ba Haba) was by far one of the cutest tourist villages we’ve seen, but we only past through as we headed over the winding coastal roads to Blackwoods Campground. After registering with the park ranger, we found our campsite and quickly set up our tent, cots, rain cover, and fire pit before we lost the last bit of sunlight. We ate a quick snack and headed back into town, hopefully to use the internet in a café. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find anyplace to hook up until we were told about a bar that had wifi. So, we went in to have a drink at the bar and do some more planning…but the wifi didn’t work…so we just drank and asked locals about ghost stories.
After a beer, we headed back to the campsite for a bit more dinner and a fire. On the way, we came across a spooky old cemetery and decided to check it out…but there were no zombies to visit with us.

We made it back to our campsite, had a bite, attempted a fire (but the wood was too green…boo!) and settled into our sleeping bags. It was fun for both of us to spend the night in a tent for the first time in 10 years.

Who likes eggs and beans for breakfast?
Got up early, made a campfire breakfast of eggs, beans, and green onions. Cleaned up our campsite just in time for the rain. It was unfortunate that the weather wasn’t cooperating, because we were looking forward to doing a bit of hiking and exploring…but instead we spent the morning in a cozy library planning the next step of our trip. After a nice warm cup a coffee and a few hours on the computer, we had the specifics of the day complete and the week ahead well organized. We headed out of Acadia National Park through misty rain and looked over the grey harbor and tall pines that come right up to the water. The rain continued as we drove down the North Atlantic coast, passing dozens of inviting and mysterious New England style inns, the roads peppered with purple flowers, the ocean 100 yards to our left. Tonight we sleep in a HAUNTED INN on the COAST OF MAINE!!!...
